Abstract

This study examines how providing structured lesson planning support can better prepare preservice teachers (PSTs) to address the moments of uncertainty in their teaching that arise when addressing relational aspects of teaching while working to achieve the mathematical lesson goals of the lesson. We analyzed the post-lesson reflections and lesson plans of 14 PSTs in an early field experience. Our findings show that although PSTs still face uncertainties in managing students’ socio-emotional needs, providing structured support shifts the way PSTs approach these uncertainties. Findings described here have implications for mathematics teacher education, specifically how PSTs are prepared to lesson plan.
