Differences in Suicide Acceptability Among Young People in the United States and South Korea

Abstract

The current study aims to identify the differences in suicide acceptability between young adults within the United States and South Korea. Studies by researchers identified a universal negative relationship between suicide acceptability and an increase in suicidality in different cultures across Asian, American, and European countries. Until now, however, research in suicide acceptability has been limited in engaging a multi-cultural view on suicide acceptability, has focused on the elderly or adolescents, or has limited consideration of strain theory. Utilizing nationally representative data from the U.S. and Korea in 2018, this study seeks to determine differences in suicidal acceptability and the relationship between strains of suicidal acceptability in young people in these two countries.
