Can Training and Apprentice Programs Increase Worker Well-Being and Optimism?

Abstract

Studies linking education to life satisfaction are ignored. This study uses a Structural Equation Model with Multinomial Propensity Score Weighting to evaluate LaunchCode's direct and indirect effects on life contentment and optimism. We found that c oding course graduates are happy and optimistic. Job-skill match and income are key variables explaining the positive relationship between program participation and life satisfaction. Through our moderated mediation model, we find that those without a BA are less likely to find STEM employment, reducing LaunchCode's positive effects on life satisfaction and optimism. This study implies that a pprenticeship is important for life satisfaction and optimism.  The mediation model emphasizes eudaimonic labor over earnings, and our moderating model shows that non-traditional students need these opportunities.
