Abstract

This study explored Chinese adolescent learners’ user experience and perception of ETS, an automated listening & speaking practice app for high-stakes standardized test. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 275 grade-seven participants. The findings showed that the participants generally held positive perception of the app, whilst high-proficiency participants rated the app as more useful in five measurements. Regression analysis spot three predictors for perceived usefulness and two for willingness to recommend the app. The findings also showed that the app, though equipped with sophisticated, high-tech features, was somehow in a rudimentary form and awaited improvements. This study suggests that teachers and app developers have important roles to play in fuller realization of the app’s potential for language learning.
