Abstract

This study examines teacher candidates’ exposure to Culturally Responsive Education issues as part of their teacher preparation program. The participants are 12 teachers and teacher educators working in public schools, non-profit organizations, and universities in Florida, US. The interview data indicate that teacher candidates increase their understanding of Culturally Responsive Education when they are explicitly taught about historical and cultural contexts of society (e.g., educational disparities, segregation, racism) during their internship. The findings suggest that shadowing culturally competent teachers, conducting assignments on diverse school cultures, and studying one’s own identity (e.g., beliefs and biases) can enhance teacher candidates’ cultural responsiveness.
