There is a rising nationalism and anti-western sentiments among Chinese people, even among many Chinese international students, who defend the Chinese state against western countries. This has formed a distinct contrast with China’s and Chinese people’s deep involvement in globalization. While the juxtaposition of nationalism and cosmopolitanism has not been new, the Chinese case is unique in its party-state regime. By critically analyzing China’s two curricula for citizenship education that correspond to its two consecutive yet different stages of its global involvement, I compared these curricula’s cosmopolitan and nationalistic ideas and examined how they are used to serve China’s sociopolitical agendas in the early 2000s and around 2020.
