Learning from different genres of texts is essential. Emotions play a crucial role in reading, yet, their significance remains unexplored. This study investigated the impact of text genres on attention focus and allocation, as well as examined the relationship between attention and emotion. We recorded eye movements while university students (n=54) were reading narrative, expository and multi-genre texts. Results showed expository texts exhibited significantly higher fixation counts than narratives. The number of fixations was positively correlated with confusion and frustration. In contrast, the distance between fixations negatively correlated with fixation counts, reading time and mental load. Together, the challenging expository texts required attention and provoked negative-activating emotions. Whereas, linear reading patterns were associated with faster reading and less mental demand.
