Despite persistent efforts to explain gender disparity in science, gendered value socialization processes have not been fully explicated. Using the responses of students and their parents from two Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) cohorts, we tested whether parental value related to their child’s motivation, achievement, and career aspirations differently depending on the child’s gender. Parents’ perception of science value predicted the science self-efficacy, interest, utility value, and career aspirations of girls and boys differently, but the pattern was not consistent across the two cohorts. In comparison, science interest was a stronger predictor of boys’ science achievement, whereas science utility value was a stronger predictor of girls’ science-related career aspirations consistently across the two cohorts.
