Abstract

Home math environment is related to mathematical abilities, yet the mechanism of such relation between SES and patterning skills remains unclear. This study tested 160 5–6-year-old Chinese preschool children (82 boys and 78 girls; Mage = 65.73 months, SDage = 3.76) and their parents completed a home math environment questionnaire, we found that there is a strong correlation between children’s family SES and home number activities and patterning activities. After controlling other variables, home patterning activities could significantly predict children’s patterning skills. This study also highlights the important role of home number activities and pattern activities in explaining the relation between family SES and children’s patterning skills.
