Abstract

This study examines changes in Intercultural Knowledge and Competence (IKC) of pre-service teachers after participating in three intercultural activities. We integrated three intercultural activities into an English language learner (ELL) education course at a U.S. university for equity-centered teacher education. The research questions are (1) How do the activities influence IKC of the pre-service teachers? (2) How do the activities transform the work of the pre-service teachers with their ELLs? Data were collected through a retrospective pre-post survey to measure 109 pre-service teachers’ IKC and 14 follow-up semi-structured interviews in 2021-2022. The preliminary findings show the pre-service teachers’ IKC level increased, contributing to enhancing their equity-centered belief and teaching practices for ELLs in their future classroom.
