Abstract

This study aims to develop a better understanding of the social capital of school boards by analyzing and discussing social relations within their administrative communities that are collectively aiming for the professionalization of teacher teams. Using a mixed methods case study design, we first measured the joint vision and visualized existing ties among 58 administrators (staff, school directors, board members) of two Dutch VET colleges using social network analysis. Subsequently qualitative data were collected through interviews. Results suggest that ties between directors and staff need to be strengthened in order to fully utilize staff expertise for teacher teams. Furthermore a joint vision on interventions is needed in order to act properly when the professionalization of a team is lagging behind.
