Students who participate in digital multimodal composing, such as video production, often demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, and a semiotic awareness. In the classroom context, it is therefore of interest to understand how teachers can guide students in digital multimodal composing. This study focuses on the aspect of giving student choice in digital multimodal composition and raises some critical questions for teachers to consider in designing for student agency. The data is drawn from a research project on multiliteracies teaching in Singapore. I report on the teachers’ reflections from their lessons, as well as the student’s perceptions of their learning experience, and highlight the considerations for designing digital multimodal composing practices in the language classroom.
