Engaging Higher Education Students in Creating Curricular Content to Increase Equity

Abstract

Using small-scale curricular experiments, this study seeks to learn about replicable strategies and principles for re-imagining higher education students as co-creators of course content. Three faculty members at a broad-access university designed and implemented a strategy to increase students’ opportunities for input into the curriculum within a single course. The three courses offered a wide range of contexts, including undergraduate, Master's level, and Doctoral students; and in-person, on zoom, and online formats. Across this range, the study found increased student engagement, connection to personal experiences, and interest in hearing others’ perspectives.
