Abstract

Research on the effects of private tutoring often neglects the potentially different effects of different types of private tutoring. Using data from PISA 2018, this study sets out to examine the effects of three types of private tutoring (enrichment math, remedial math, and study skills instruction) on math achievement. Results of the multiple regressions show a positive association between math achievement and tutoring on enrichment math and remedial math. A negative relationship was found between study skills instruction and math test scores. These relationships still hold after accounting for student background information such as family socioeconomic status indicators. The study provides evidence for the importance of attending to the different types of private tutoring when evaluating the effects of tutoring.
