Delayed Effects? An Examination of Long-Term Effects of the Broncos FIRST First-Year Experience

Abstract

First-year experience courses are common in postsecondary education, but are rarely causally evaluated. Recent work raised the possibility of delayed positive effects -- students who showed no gains during FYE but improved grades later -- not using causal methods. We use an experimental-assignment FYE and longitudinal institutional outcome data to test whether delayed positive outcomes for FYE participants are a replicable finding. Results suggest that the experiment did not result in a higher likelihood of positive student outcomes, such as graduation. The full AERA paper will explore more outcomes and critical quantitative models.
