Illusions of Equity: A Comparative Case Analysis

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Concourse Level, Michigan 3

Abstract

The purpose of this presentation is to re-center the praxis of equity in education as a distinctly different intervention from that of related concepts, such as diversity, equality, and inclusion. We will argue that some of the confusions in meanings have been deliberate, while others unintentional; but effects have resulted, too often, in living with the illusions of equity, rhetorically and structurally, and, thus, normalizing inequities within and beyond educational institutions. The researchers conducted qualitative case studies in Morocco and the USA specifically in the context of "student accommodations" in higher education. Whereas Morocco takes a “liberal arts” approach to achieving educational equity, the interventions in the USA travel through social and emotional learning, assistive technologies, and changing mindsets.
