Abstract

This study will discuss findings from a study examining educational experiences of African immigrant youth. Findings demonstrate that African immigrant youth grapple with deficit discourses and several obstacles such as language and communication barriers, low expectations from teachers and peers, and racial marginalization in school environments. This study amplifies students’ voices and concludes with a number of pedagogical implications for preparing globally competent teachers and teacher educators who are informed and empowered to teach all twenty-first-century students, including those of African descent.
