This paper attempts to make sense of Indonesian literacy teachers’ agency in teaching intercultural awareness. Using an ecological perspective of teacher agency, we found that the teachers’ cultural factor plays a major role in motivating their decision to bring intercultural awareness value in teaching. Being an exemplary teacher earned the teachers respect from the school, giving them the freedom to teach intercultural awareness values (structural factor). Regarding the material factor, although not equally available in their respective schools, the teachers often compensated for their lack of resources to teach intercultural awareness using their networks. Even in the scarcity of material support, teachers will find a way to teach the value of intercultural awareness in their classroom.
