Abstract

This paper explores how a human-centered design learning experience can support students' sustainable development awareness by designing and making their local community challenges in Thailand and Laos. The study is a qualitative design-based research project that engaged youth to design and build innovations that solve environmental and social problems in their communities. In this paper, we mainly describe education for sustainable development course where undergraduate students from various disciplines were tasked with constructing ''social or environmental solutions'' for people in their community in Thailand. We also describe a design of a youth forum in Laos to engage youth with local artisans in designing innovative solutions that could safeguard community-level intangible cultural heritage.
