Active Learning as Inclusive Teaching: A Data Science Literature Review

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

In this research, we conduct a systematic literature review of active learning in statistics and data science education. With active learning pedagogy on the rise across the STEM disciplines, there is a growing recognition of the benefits of active learning for traditionally underrepresented groups. Situating our research through constructivist and inclusive learning frameworks, we explore where and how active learning in statistics is explored. Our research finds a very western-heavy list of publishing authors, and a disparate variety of approaches reviewed in the literature. Our findings point to the need for broader expansion of publication on active learning but also finds a broad foundation for those looking to implement active learning. Implications for practitioners and future research will be discussed.
