Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: 2nd Level, Gold Room

Abstract

The number of English language learners (ELLs) in schools is growing, yet many ELLs struggle with being college-ready by the time they graduate high school. School counselors are an important part of a student’s college preparation while in high school. School counselors help students create their class schedules, learn about college requirements, and support students in making their post-secondary decisions.
This mixed methods study will analyze former high school ELLs’ perceptions and experiences of how their high school counselors prepared them for college academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition, this study will analyze how school counselors use the Community Cultural Wealth model (Yosso, 2005) to support ELL college readiness.
