Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, Chicago, Floor: 2nd Floor, Caspian

Abstract

Philanthropy in higher education is vital, and better understanding LGBTQ+ allyship affiliations and motivations for giving can help to uplift colleges and universities. This qualitative case study was conducted at state university. All 16 participants were heterosexual, cisgender, and donors to an LGBTQ+ campus program and/or student initiative. Themes revealed LGBTQ+ allyship affiliations were due to having an LGBTQ+ family member or close friend, and supporting social justice and equality for all. Donor motivations were due to having trust with the professional fundraiser, and an interest in an LGBTQ+ giving category. The study advances a new theoretical framework – allyship based motivation – whereby allyship towards causes oriented around diversity, equity, and inclusion is an integral component of being and self-identity.
