Analyzing data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:2009), this study examines the disparities in high school advanced course enrollment by college generation status and how various college counseling supports may influence advanced course enrollment and college enrollment outcomes of first-generation college (FGC) students. This study provides national evidence that overall FGC students were less likely to enroll in advanced coursework in high school, but FGC students who had access to college counseling support (i.e., counselors dedicated to college preparation and counselors who prioritize college preparation) were more likely to enroll in advanced coursework. The findings also show that FGC students who enrolled in advanced coursework during high school reported a higher likelihood of four-year college enrollment.
