How Does Teacher Capital Contribute to Student Achievement Within Dynamic School Contexts?

Fri, May 5, 2:30 to 4:00pm CDT (2:30 to 4:00pm CDT), Division L Virtual Sessions, Division L - Section 6: Human Capital and School Finance Virtual Roundtable Room

Abstract

To identify what causes changes to teacher performance, I will explore the relationships between teacher effects on students and school contexts, particularly using teaching experience and school socio-economic status. To analyze the relationships, I will employ a value-added model with a multi-level administrative dataset and see how teacher effects vary depending on school contexts, especially concerning student non-cognitive outcomes. Consistent with prior studies, I expect the following conclusion that teachers will be positively associated with student outcomes, but their effects will vary due to contextual impacts. This study will once again set a stage for discussing the significance of contextual and institutional support for cultivating quality teachers, rather than focusing on the individual characteristics of teachers.
