Factors Influencing Mississippi K–8 Teachers' Instructional Approaches During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Rural Perspectives

Abstract

This statewide study used survey research and focus groups to document how Mississippi teachers responded to the need for alternative educational delivery models during the COVID-19 pandemic. The voices of K-8 general educators, from one of the most rural states in the country, help to illuminate the instructional approaches of many rural school districts in providing emergency instruction via various models, as well as what was considered ineffective. In particular, in any delivery model, including face-to-face, a significant increase in the use of technology was noted and influenced by preparedness, online resources, and teacher technological pedagogical content knowledge.
