This non-experimental, correlational study examined the factors that influence faculty engagement through structural equation modeling. University professors in Panama completed a questionnaire that measured employee engagement, higher education job satisfaction, affective commitment, organizational culture, and employment characteristics. While the relationship between these variables has been widely explored in human resource management (HRM) research, little has been written about these relationships in the context of higher education. The resulting model estimated an acceptable fit in which the organizational culture of an HEI and the professor’s employment characteristics were positively related to job satisfaction. Job satisfaction, in turn, predicted affective commitment, and, further, employee engagement.
