Students With Disabilities and Homelessness: A Systematic Review of the Research Evidence in the United States (Poster 26)

Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

Children and youth are among the most vulnerable populations experiencing homelessness (Collins et al., 2018; Sullivan-Walker et al., 2017). Previous systematic reviews have focused on the adverse social, emotional, and cognitive outcomes of homelessness (Bassuk et al., 2014; Buckner, 2008) but none have examined students with disabilities. This systematic literature synthesis aims to integrate the existing research on school-aged students with disabilities experiencing homeless and provide a comprehensive picture of their experiences and outcomes in the public education system. Of particular interest is identifying the factors associated with timely special education services for students with disabilities experiencing homeless. The synthesis has implications for how schools and educators serve students who are marginalized at the intersections of disability and homelessness.
