Transforming Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Ideas Into Actions for Real Change: Advancing DEI Mindset, Self-Efficacy, and Practice

Fri, April 14, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Erie

Abstract

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) trainings are fundamentally important in advancing equity in education. Using a mixed-methods research design, we assessed the relevance and effectiveness of an all-day workshop in cultivating DEI mindset, self-efficacy, and practices among educational leaders. Findings show measurable qualitative and quantitative changes in leaders’ DEI mindset, moving from a theoretical to an action-based perspective and improved DEI self-efficacy. Implications discuss how improving DEI mindset and self-efficacy expects to advance DEI school practices. Future directions will include tracking whether the impacts of the workshop hold steady, lose steam, or grow self-efficacy over time with participants as well as replicating the workshop to identify whether these growths occur among a general teacher population.
