Digital games can be effective at developing language skills (Dixon, 2022), and they also offer a high degree of variation in the players’ learning experiences. This presentation describes a mixed methods study involving seventy-four Japanese children and their caregivers who used a digital English language learning app for 16 weeks. The app blends a structured curriculum with an open discovery free-play environment. Children and their families chose what, when, and how they played, with the app engine capturing this information in-game, and surveys and interviews capturing their thoughts and observations. Combining these data sources with pre- and post- assessments of children’s English ability, the researchers investigated how individuals’ English learning experiences in a digital app are related into learning outcomes.
