Texts and Contexts in Career and Technical Education: Leveraging the Entext

Abstract

Entexts are formed from objects that may be reliably interpreted for needed information within particular interpretive social contexts (e.g., torque wrenches, medical drip bags). These specialized entexts are arguably “texts.” Nevertheless, their historical use and value in literacy practices, particularly in postsecondary career and technical education, has not been recognized by literacy theorists, even in era of multiliteracies and multimodality. We offer a definition and insights into underlying practices that may have marginalized these literacies. This definition leads to more inclusive theorizing regarding what may count in text usage practices.
