Abstract

We use PISA (2018) data to examine the achievement levels of secondary school students with an immigration background in the UK in comparison to other Anglophone countries. We construct several multi-level models and find that second-generation students are more likely to underperform compared to others and first-generation students perform better than third-plus generation students. We also find that the second-generation students who speak their mother tongue score significantly higher than everyone else. The pattern is unique to the UK and is opposite to what is observed in the case of other Anglophone countries. We discuss the findings in the context of the diversity of immigration patterns across time periods in different countries and inequality among populations.
