As we face complicated, interdisciplinary problems with STEM foundations, we need instructional programs that connect STEM learning to the design of solutions. Using an instructional program that fosters content learning through science and engineering practices, we conducted research to address, What three-dimensional science learning do adolescents demonstrate in association with a solutioning curricular program? Data were collected from 208 intervention and comparison students studying ecology content. An identical pre-posttest provided evidence of student learning. Results demonstrated that students in the solutioning intervention achieved significant learning gains and significant improvement in argument construction compared to comparison students. We welcome additional research and dialogue to explore the value and impact of instructional programs that connect STEM learning to the design of solutions.
