Strategies College Faculty Adopt in Dealing With Racism in the Classroom

Sat, April 15, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

This qualitative narrative inquiry explored the classroom experiences of five faculty of color and white faculty on the strategies used in teaching amidst racial tension. Preventive strategies instructors adopt according to the findings included focusing a lot on blackness in America and marginalized authors and remaining vigilant about where they find their own blind spots. On the other hand, responsive strategies included quickly shutting down things that seemed to go into negative, being so used to ignoring racist expressions, and asking sequence questions. The study recommends that educational institutions intensify training and forms of support geared towards equipping faculty with further practical skills for preventing and responding to racism in the classroom.
