Midwestern Superintendent Resilience: A Qualitative Examination of Personal and Professional Characteristics

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore P-12 school superintendent resilience. Although a wealth of literature exists on resilience in leadership, comparatively neglected is literature on superintendent resilience. This study situates superintendent resilience within Duchek’s (2017) organizational resilience conceptual framework. Fourteen Midwestern superintendents were interviewed, exploring how they demonstrate resilience and overcome challenges. The researchers conducted descriptive content analysis coding procedures on the interview transcripts revealing superintendents require dependable and lasting relationships in all facets of their role, a strong teamwork atmosphere, and a positive outlook. Participants expressed that it was easy to become depressed and isolated; however, if they utilized their personal supports, focused on self-care, and did not give up, they could succeed and persevere.
