This paper proposes a conceptual framework for equipping Black females with the necessary critical media literacy skills to successfully recognize, decode, and deconstruct negative messaging that is seen in the media to develop a positive Black female identity. This paper contextualizes the importance of critical media literacy as a tool for shaping positive identity development for Black females. Framing our conceptual framework, Black Feminist Theory (BFT), with the concept of critical media literacy (CML) and critical consciousness, we present a clear argument for the development of critical media literacy skills and critical consciousness to help break the perpetual cycle of subjugation of Black female identity pervasive in the media.
