Abstract

Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) programs have expanded rapidly in recent years but immigrant background multilingual families receive limited information about program offerings. In this qualitative study, we used critical discourse analysis to review the websites of 21 schools with DLBE programs. We found limited information about DLBE offerings such as the program model, principles, and values on school websites. Professionally done websites with vibrant photos, videos, and detailed information were most often found in gentrified communities, potentially excluding low-income and immigrant communities. Also, the school websites that included information about DLBE mainly focused on narrow goals of multilingualism that are less aligned with the needs and interests of immigrant and low-income families. Research and practical implications are discussed.
