Abstract

The social and emotional experiences of infants as they transition from home to early childhood education and care services (ECEC) have received limited research attention to date. Seeking to address this lacuna, a longitudinal study spanning six countries (Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Finland, Scotland, US) tracked the transition experiences of 16 infants from home into and between ECEC contexts over an 8-month period. Using dialogic methodology, data from a series of teacher and parent interviews, fine-tuned observations, videos, and ECEC service documentation were generated. Our findings highlight the impacts of early transition for the emotional and social well-being of all concerned.
