Drawing on a five-component transformative civic education theoretical framework (Author 3, 2020) and ethnographic and discourse analysis methods, I examine how fourth-grade students and their teacher co-constructed deeper understandings of civic engagement. I found students and their teacher discussed 11 forms of civic engagement, which covered a wide range of civic activities, emphasized taking action, addressed critical analysis of news/information, and included forms (such as petitions and protesting) often used to support equity-oriented sociopolitical change. I also found that the teacher used specific curricular and interactional moves to foster transformative civic learning, which I argue we must support in teacher education. I also argue including critical analysis of news/information plays an essential role in preparing students for transformative civic engagement.
