"I Never Really Thought About It": Teachers' Perceptions of Equity in a 1:1 Laptop School

Sat, April 15, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Chicago Ballroom VIII

Abstract

The purpose of our study was to understand and identify the challenges of operationalizing equity in 1:1 laptop schools. We focus on the question: How do teachers in a 1:1 laptop school define and operationalize equity in their practice to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners? We use digital equity to frame our case study which took place at an urban, Title 1 middle school. Our analysis indicates that while teachers value equitable approaches to teaching with technology, they minimally articulate a clear definition of equity and ability to operationalize it in their pedagogy. Given this, we stress the importance of professional development in this area not just for in-service teachers but also for pre-service teacher candidates.
