Abstract

Smartphone addiction, broadly defined as an addictive behavioral disorder due to smartphone overuse, has adverse consequences. Among different measures of smartphone addiction, the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) is one of the most widely used in prior research. However, inconsistent factor structures of SAS have been reported in the previous literature, calling for a systematic examination of the scale dimensionality. Thus, this study compared four confirmatory factor models of SAS using an American sample (N = 1,155). A bifactor model outperformed the others in representing SAS, indicating its unidimensionality. The results provide gaudiness for applied researchers interested in using SAS in their studies.
