Deficit or Asset? Understanding International Students' Cultural Heritage as a Contributor to Academic Acculturation

Fri, May 5, 4:15 to 5:45pm CDT (4:15 to 5:45pm CDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, Multicultural/Multiethnic Education: Theory, Research and Practice SIG Virtual Paper Room

Abstract

Have you ever wondered how international doctoral students from different cultures, languages, and backgrounds acclimate to Western academic spaces? Through a global meaning making or interepistemic synergy approach (Author, 2019, Tierney, 2018), that includes multimodal analysis of data (Blommaert, 2013; Jewitt, 2013; van Leeuwen, 2017) and a decolonizing methodologies lens (Smith, 2012), this presentation grapples with acculturative experiences of a Taiwanese, Indonesian, and Kenyan doctoral students to illuminate their acculturative academic journeys. The conference theme is echoed in this autoethnographic study in that we interrogate research traditions related to the analysis of data whilst illustrating how taking up culturally sourced concepts, as analytical tools, can chart a productive path for the pursuit of truth about academic acculturation.
