Visual-textual pairing is proposed as a method of arts-based practice involving personal growth and community learning. Drawing from the arts-based educational methodology of a/r/tography, propositional thinking, and place-based learning, the arts-based visual method of making photo pairs is extended to incorporate visual-textual elements in ways that foster creative knowing and collaboration. Comparison with the pedagogical method of the jigsaw technique is also made to show how visual-textual pairing promotes learning in ways that affirm individual subjectivity and difference as an aspect of being in community.
