Mitigating Teacher Burnout: Teacher Burnout Preparation From the Perspectives of Two Teacher Education Students

Abstract

This study examines the role of teacher education programs in preservice teachers (PTs)’ awareness of and preparation for burnout in the teaching profession. Data on the perceptions and experiences of two preservice teachers were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and observational fieldnotes. Study findings show that PTs are exposed to teacher burnout while attending teacher preparation programs, though they receive minimal and indirect support from their program for mitigating burnout. Considering the role that burnout plays in historically high levels of teacher attrition, this study raises questions about the roles and responsibilities of teacher education programs in preparing PTs for navigating the high demands of the teaching profession and attenuating teacher burnout.
