Abstract

Teachers participate in many professional development (PD) activities throughout their careers. However, knowledge about intra-person variations of motivational reasons for PD participation over time is scarce. This study uses data from more than 2,400 teachers during the first two years of the Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry reform. Applying latent profile analyses, we identified three distinct profiles of teacher motivation for PD participation: “AP reform,” “convenience,” and “requirement”. Latent transition analysis indicated movements across motivational profiles over time. Overall, our study suggests that PD providers and educational administrators need to account for the varied reasons of PD participation when encouraging teachers to participate in professional learning.
