Abstract

Current research on the transition from middle school to secondary school has one common thread: the transition is difficult. This project investigates teacher perspectives on how to best support learners during the transition from elementary school mathematics to high school mathematics. The purposes of this project were to improve the teaching and learning of grade 7-9 mathematics and to better understand collaborative inquiry. Participants for this study included teachers from a total of 15 schools. After the completion of four workshops, semi-structured interviews were completed with five participants. The key findings include communication and collaboration among middle school and high school teachers, grade 8-9 foundational mathematics skills needed, and transition preparation required for a successful transition into secondary school mathematics.
