Equitable Education on Equity: Educating Elders on LGBT Issues in Taiwan (Poster 35)

Abstract

Education for the retired and elderly community on social issues is lacking. Currently Taiwan
is fighting to make the country a more equitable place for LGBT people after legalizing same-sex
marriage in 2019. This study analyses a course on LGBT and gender equity designed specifically for the
often overlooked, education-wise, elderly community. A post-test quantitative and qualitative assessment
was completed. Results show no difference in male and female respondents. Results show those who
were supportive of same-sex marriage after the course responded to gender equity questions with
significantly higher acceptance. Qualitative responses show changed minds and a desire to change action.
Future research on LGBT-equity education should focus on making LGBT education available to the
elderly community.
