Achieving the Right to Education for Homeless Students: What We Can Learn From Street Schools

Abstract

To realize the SDG “Quality Education” for homeless school dropouts, so-called street schools were founded in Germany. There, they can acquire school diplomas while their special learning conditions and circumstances are considered. The difficulties of street youth in mainstream schools show that they often do not receive adequate education in the regular school system. The present interview study answers the question what special learning conditions street youths have in science classes and how science teachers and responsible persons of street schools support them regarding their learning conditions. These questions are answered in depth regarding the absenteeism of street youths in (science) classes in street schools. The findings allow conclusions for educational situations with homeless students not only in Germany.
