Career Choice Motives and Vocational Interests of Teachers

Abstract

The lack of qualified teachers endangers the education of students all over the world. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the reasons that cause people to choose the career of a teacher. For this purpose, the current study analyzes teachers’ career choice motives that are particularly related to the teaching profession as well as teachers’ vocational interests that are also supposed to predict career choice behavior but that are not restricted to a specific field of profession. The results of analyses based on a sample of graduated student teachers (N = 146) indicate that intrinsic career choice motives are correlated to Social and Enterprising interests. However, only career choice motives are able to predict teachers’ satisfaction with their career choice.
