This general qualitative study examines how women who work in student affairs and have at least one child with at least one disability, negotiate their work and family responsibilities. The findings of this study suggest that they do not negotiate their family and work responsibilities alone. These women utilize various support systems, some of which are not in the family or work domain. We refer to these supports as “border helpers”. In this paper, we discuss how theoretical frameworks could be expanded to include the important role “border helpers” play.
