Investigating Measurement Invariance in the Cornell Critical Thinking Tests Between Australian and Chinese Students

Abstract

Cornell Critical Thinking Test Level Z has been applied internationally to assess critical thinking among tertiary students. However, limited empirical evidence exists to support the validity of the translated versions of the test. This study examines the validity of the test translated in Chinese. The data were collected from 247 Chinese and 233 Australian tertiary students. This study found that the empirical factorial structure did not fully align with the hypothesised structures provided in the test manual. The results of measurement invariance indicated that some items developed in English-speaking contexts were likely to show differential item functioning when translated to other languages. The limitations and implications of this study are discussed at the end.
